Short term migration: a recent picture
In the year ending mid-2013, many more people left England and Wales (emigration) than came into the country (immigration) on a short-term basis, between 3 and 12 months. The majority of emigrants were British, while immigrants were mainly from the EU.
The most common country for emigrants to go to was India and short-term immigrants were also likely to come from India. People mostly travelled to the UK for holiday or family, followed by study. Since 2012 the number of short term emigrants over 65 has increased by 5%.
The latest provisional data looks at people migrating to and from England and Wales, for periods of 3-12 months in mid-2013.
