The 2011 Census showed that 51% of adults in England and Wales were single¹, a rise from 47% in 2001.

The concentration of single people however, varied across England and Wales. For instance, in Headingley (Leeds), 92% of the adult population were single – in contrast to only 29% in Greater Marlow (Buckinghamshire).

The composition of the single population also varied. For example, in Scotton (Richmondshire) 85% of single people were male while in Heslington, York 94% of single people were aged 16 to 34.
